BOONE, N.C. –– A Kelvin Robinson (Little Rock, Ark./Episcopal) sent the game into overtime on a 3-pointer with 0.5 seconds remaining in regulation where Appalachian would outscore James Madison 14-2 to prevail 73-61 on Saturday afternoon inside the Holmes Center.
With the Mountaineers (4-6) trailing the Dukes (1-9) 59-56 and 6.8 seconds left in the game, Patrick Good (Johnson City, Tenn./David Crockett) brought the ball up and passed to Robinson toward the near sideline who poured in a 25-footer to knot the game at 59-59 with 0.5 seconds left.
In overtime, App State got off to a quick start and would outscore the Dukes 14-2 in the extra period to win by a 12-point margin, 73-61.
The Mountaineers (4-6) put together a balanced scoring effort with four Mountaineers finishing in double-figures and Ronshad Shabazz (Raleigh, N.C./Huntington Prep (W.V.)) led the squad with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field, including 4-of-10 from 3-point range.
Both Griffin Kinney (Delaware, Ohio/Fork Union Military) and Good finished with 13 points each. Good finished 3-for-5 from long range. Robinson tallied 11 points.
The Apps forced 22 James Madison turnovers and converted those into 25 points.
After hitting a three to open the game, App State engineered a 9-0 run to take a 9-3 lead, however, a 10-2 counter-run by the Dukes erased their deficit. The Dukes' largest lead of the first half was nine points with 1:59 left, but App State finished the half on a 7-2 run to trail by just four at the break.
In the second half, App State took its first lead on a three from Robinson at the 15:26 mark - 36-34. The Dukes would regain the lead and lead by as many as six at 42-36 with 11:08 remaining.
Just about four minutes later a Good 3-pointer gave App State a 47-46 advantage and both teams would trade four more times before the Robinson three tied the game and sent it to overtime.
In overtime, the Dukes' Tom Vodanovich hit two free throws - one tied the game at 61-61, however, Appalachian scored the next 12 points - all unanswered to seal the win.
