Wrestling Ranks No. 22 in USA Today/NWCA Poll

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University wrestling made program history on Tuesday, ranking No. 22 in the nation in the USA Today/NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll after going 2-1 last week.

The Mountaineers (5-1, 1-0 SoCon) moved up one spot to their highest-ever ranking in the major poll, now being the sole member of the Southern Conference in the Top 25 after Virginia knocked Chattanooga from No. 24 to third-highest in the "others receiving votes" category. Appalachian is also one of only four schools in the rankings to have at least five wins and no more than one loss, joining Nebraska, Rutgers and Drexel.

The Black and Gold's lone loss this season came on Nov. 30 when No. 9 NC State pulled away late to get the victory. After the setback, App State bounced back in a big way, defeating its first SoCon opponent of the year, Davidson, 43-3 before downing Sacred Heart later in the day 43-0 to complete its tough stretch of four matches in six days.

App State wrestling's USA Today/NWCA Top 25 ranking continues to be, outside of App State football being ranked in the FCS poll, the only Appalachian sports team to have been ranked in the top-25 of a major national poll since App State baseball was ranked No. 24 in Baseball America's May 14, 2012 poll.

The Mountaineers will take a break for finals before returning to the mat on Wednesday, Dec. 14 in Varsity Gym as they host SoCon foe Campbell. The action is set to begin at 7 p.m.

The only way to guarantee a seat to the action of App State wrestling's historic season is by purchasing season tickets. Prices for adults will be $30/each and for youth fans (ages 3-12) $15/each. Individual match prices will be $7 for adults and $3 for youth except for the Feb. 5 match against Chattanooga, which will be $10 for adults and $3 for youth.

To purchase tickets, visit appstatesports.com/tickets, (828) 262-2079, or visit the Appalachian State athletics ticket office, located inside the Holmes Center. Tickets are also available at the door on matchday.
