BOONE, N.C. — For the second week in a row, Appalachian State University wrestling came in ranked No. 23 in the nation in the USA Today/NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll, while the Mountaineers also stayed steady at No. 21 in the InterMat rankings.
The Black and Gold (2-0) will play host to North Carolina (1-0) on Sunday, Nov. 27 after the Tar Heels re-entered the USA Today/NWCA poll this week after a one-week hiatus, coming in at No. 25. UNC also comes in No. 22 in the InterMat rankings to make Sunday's matchup in App State's Varsity Gym one of the first handful of duals matches between two nationally ranked opponents this season.
The showdown between the two teams is only the second time a nationally-ranked Appalachian State wrestling team has hosted another Top 25 program – the first being last season when the No. 24 Apps hosted No. 5 Missouri on Feb. 11. The last time App State hosted head coach JohnMark Bentley's alma mater, the Mountaineers fell by one point in a 22-21 heartbreaker.
The Mountaineers are coming off a fourth-place finish at the Keystone Classic, falling only behind No. 1 Penn State, No. 21 Pittsburgh, and Eastern Michigan. North Carolina is coming off a 28-12 victory over then-No. 25 Old Dominion.
Sunday's matchup features eight Top 25 wrestlers between the two teams in their respective weight classes. Appalachian's sophomore Matt Zovistoski continues to rocket up the charts at 149 pounds, this week coming in at No. 11; junior Forrest Przybysz is No. 17 in the 165-pound division; junior 174-pounder Nick Kee is No. 18; while senior heavyweight Denzel Dejournette comes in at No. 9.
North Carolina features No. 9 141-pounder Joey Ward, No. 16 157-pounder Joey Moon, No. 8 174-pounder Ethan Ramos and No. 18 184-pounder Chip Ness.
The match is set to begin at 3 p.m.
The only way to guarantee a seat for the action this year is by purchasing App State Wrestling season tickets. Prices for adults will be $30/each and for youth fans (ages 3-12) $15/each. Individual match prices will be $7 for adults and $3 for youth except for the Feb. 5 match against Chattanooga, which will be $10 for adults and $3 for youth.
To purchase tickets, visit appstatesports.com/tickets, (828) 262-2079, or visit the Appalachian State athletics ticket office, located inside the Holmes Center. Tickets are also available at the door on matchday.
