BOONE, N.C. — Junior Appalachian State University wrestler David Peters-Logue was tabbed the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week after going 2-0 in duals over the weekend, the league announced on Wednesday.
The junior 184-pounder had an impressive opening duals weekend, starting off the season 2-0 for the second-straight year, improving to 5-2 overall on the year, as Appalachian (2-0) hosted Belmont Abbey and then-No. 15 Oregon State for Mountaineer Duals on Saturday, Nov. 12.Â
In the first match of the day on Saturday, Peters-Logue made quick work of Belmont Abbey's Luke Glunt, getting a dominating 15-0 technical fall victory. He then came though in a crucial spot of the Mountaineers come-from-behind victory over Oregon State when he battled in a ferocious back-and-forth with then-No. 12 184-pounder Corey Griego.
Carrying the momentum of three-straight Appalachian weight class wins over the Beavers, Peters-Logue gained an advantage in his match, taking Griego to the mat and getting the hugely important pin in 3:32.Â
The pin gave the Mountaineers the points they would end up needing to get the 25-15 win, rocketing Appalachian State up the USA Today/NWCA rankings to its tied-highest spot ever at No. 23. The victory also pushed App State its highest spot in InterMat rankings at No. 21 and propelled Peters-Logue to the Top 25 of 184-pounders in the country (No. 22), according to TrackWrestling.Â
The Mountaineers will return to action as they head to the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Pa. on Sunday, Nov. 20. Wrestling returns to Varsity Gym on Sunday, Nov. 27 when Appalachian plays host to North Carolina, who last week was ranked No. 25 in the poll, but dropped slightly to lead the "others receiving votes" category in this week's poll.
The only way to guarantee a seat for the action this year is by purchasing App State Wrestling season tickets. Prices for adults will be $30/each and for youth fans (ages 3-12) $15/each. Individual match prices will be $7 for adults and $3 for youth except for the Feb. 5 match against Chattanooga, which will be $10 for adults and $3 for youth.
