Men's Basketball Soars Past Methodist, 103-58

BOONE, N.C. –– Rookie Isaac Johnson netted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Ronshad Shabazz notched 15 points in Appalachian State University men's basketball's 103-58 rout of Methodist University in Tuesday night's exhibition.

 

The Mountaineers used a 30-6 run that spanned 7:48, the last 4:00 of the first half and the first 3:48 of the second half to pull away and push its lead to 61-31 and went on to win the second half 58-30.

 

The Black and Gold boasted two more in double-figures aside from Johnson and Shabazz. Emarius Logan collected 11 points and Tyrell Johnson nearly tallied a double-double and finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

 

App State and Methodist would trade leads twice in the first half with the Mountaineers leading just 18-15 with 8:26 remaining in the first half. Appalachian would push its lead to 10 with an 11-4 run keyed by a Shabazz free throw and capped by Shabazz free throw. 

 

App State would end the first half on a 14-3 run and would lead 45-28 at the break.

 

The Mountaineers would blow the game wide open in the opening moments of the second half with an 11-0 run. Griffin Kinney started the run with three-straight points on a free throw and a layup while a Logan jumper capped the run with the Apps leading by 29.

 

Over the course of the next 12:16 of the second half, Appalachian would balloon its lead to 40 points with a 96-56 lead. App State would finish off Methodist 103-58.

 

App State dominated special teams points with a big advantages in the paint 30-14, second-chance points 19-4 and bench points 35-13.

 

The Mountaineers will open the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Davidson. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m. App State will travel to Tennessee on Nov. 15 before returning home for its home opener on Nov. 17 against Warren Wilson College.
