Box Score OXFORD, OHIO - Appalachian State University field hockey fell to Miami University 6-1 on Friday evening in Oxford, Ohio at the Miami Field Hockey Complex. Senior Micaela Diedericks scored App's only goal in Ohio, her second of the season.
“Today was a good test for us to see where we stand against a top MAC opponent,” said head coach Meghan Dawson. “The first half we did not play our game at all, but we started the second half on fire and put Miami under pressure for a period of time. Miami is a really good team and really hard to play against.”
The Redhawks (9-7, 3-1 MAC) controlled most of the first half slamming in three goals. In the 12th minute, Miami's Marie-Claire Gorner received a stellar pass and scored her first goal of the season. Five minutes later, Henni Otten would smash in an unassisted goal to extend the Redhawks' lead to 2-0. After multiple back-and-forth possessions, Emily George of Miami (OH) would snag her first goal of the 2016 campaign in the 26th minute to end the half with a three-goal cushion.
Despite a 3-0 deficit, goalkeeper Rachel Gaines held strong at the net deflecting six of the Redhawks' attacks. On offense, the Mountaineers (1-12) put up two shots, but none of their attempts found openings to cut Miami University's first half lead.
Not deterred from the first period, the Mountaineers cranked it up a notch thanks to a goal less than three minutes into the second by Diedericks. Only down by two, App State was determined to rally back into the game, but Appalachian's offensive outputs fell into a slumber, and the Redhawks whacked in three-straight goals to steal the match 6-1.
Offense
Miami (OH) dominated the ball on App State's side of the turf dishing out 21 shots, 14 shots on goal and three assists, while Appalachian struggled to make offensive plays on the pitch recording only six shots with three on target.
At Net
Protecting the net for 70:00 minutes was Gaines who totaled eight saves on the evening.
