KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Appalachian State University men's and women's soccer joined 893 soccer teams (314 men, 579 women) nationwide in earning the National Soccer Coaches Association of America 2015-16 College Team Academic Award for team grade-point average, the association announced on Thursday.
To qualify for the NSCAA award, teams must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined for the award by adding every student-athlete's GPA and then dividing by the total number of student-athletes.
Men's soccer finished the year with a 3.07 GPA while women's soccer finished with a 3.5 GPA. Men's soccer was one of only three schools from the Sun Belt Conference to receive the honor, while women's soccer was one of eight teams and had the second highest GPA for the year in the conference.
Appalachian State was one of only 223 institutions in the country and one of only two schools in the Sun Belt to receive the honor for both men's and women's teams.
