Chapman Earns Offensive Player of the Week Award

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior forward Stephen Chapman was named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week for his clutch efforts in the Appalachian State University men's soccer draw with Winthrop and win over Davidson, the league announced Tuesday.

"I am pleased for Stephen to be recognized by the Sun Belt," head coach Jason O'Keefe said. "It is a great honor for his efforts so far this year and in the past week. I'm sure that he will use it as motivation to continue to do all the things he is doing to help our team."

Since Appalachian State won on Sept. 13 against USC Upstate, it has gone 2-1-1 to ignite a strong run heading into conference play.

The Mountaineers last week pushed Winthrop to the limit in a double-overtime 1-1 battle where Chapman was able to get the lone App goal after drawing a penalty kick in the 33rd minute. The Black and Gold then traveled to Davidson where they were able to win on a clutch header by Rian Phillips in the waning minutes after Chapman was able to equalize the match by drawing his third penalty kick of the season and converting the play.

In total for the two games, Chapman had five shots on goal (eight total) and two goals, going 2-2 on PKs during his 174 minutes.

Currently in the conference rankings, Chapman ranks tied for third in points with eight so far this season. The senior is also fourth in the league in points per game (1.00) and tied for third in goals with three. Also playing the playmaker role this year, Chapman is tied for fourth in assists with two. The uber-efficient Chapman ranks highly in points and goals while only just this week cracking the top 10 in total shots.

The Mountaineers are on the road Tuesday night, playing at UNC Asheville at 7 p.m. before returning home for a two-match homestand, starting with Presbyterian on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. Appalachian then begins Sun Belt Conference play by hosting Howard on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
