Apps Turn in Impressive Performance at ECU Invite

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women's tennis wrapped up a very solid weekend at the ECU Invitational in Greenville, N.C.

Appalachian netted 14 victories in singles play across seven singles flights while notching eight wins in four doubles flights, equaling 22 total wins.

“This was a great outing for us with everyone contributing to a well-rounded performance over two days,” stated head coach Blake Mosley.  “You can tell that we're getting better as the fall goes on with us increasing our win total in singles and doubles. I was happy with the effort we put in this weekend.”

Four different Mountaineers turned in a pair of wins with Heidi Swope, Melissa MachadoGabrielle Wreder and Remi Andre highlighting the two-day event. Machado and Wreder led their respective flights in wins, while Swope was one of two student-athletes with multiple victories in her flight.

Also putting up victories were Rebecca Morse, who defeated her counterpart in a hard-fought match that went to a tiebreaker. Taylor Bygrave joined Morse in the win column in her flight as well.

Megan Mullen would earn a triumph over Campbell's Roustan in a three-set affair, after coming back from a one-set deficit to force a third frame and take home the win. In the final flight, McKayla Zupan edged Covic (Campbell), 6-1, 6-3.

Marisa Anthony and Devin Knors tallied wins to round out singles action.

In doubles play, the Apps improved as they doubled their win total from the Elon Invite two weeks ago. Swope and Mullen teamed up for a pair of wins in the first flight, including a tight 8-7 victory over Segarra/Boada (Campbell).

Machado and Morse followed up their singles efforts with a 6-3 win over Cnossen/Floet of NC Central, and in flight three, Zupan and Wreder made a solid combo as the teammates partnered up for a convincing 6-1 victory. Andre and Anthony joined the other tandems with a 7-5 triumph in the same group.

Bygrave and Knors, in flight four, picked up two victories against a set of Campbell opponents. Anthony/Andre displayed solid teamwork in their victory to close out doubles play.

App State will have a weekend off from competition, but is hosting the annual alumni weekend Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
