BOONE, N.C. –– Appalachian State University volleyball dropped its 11th-consecutive loss in a straight-set sweep at the hands of Arkansas State on Friday at Varsity Gym. The 11th-straight loss is the most for the program since the 2001 season.

The Mountaineers (2-12, 0-1 Sun Belt) were led by freshman Emma Longley who finished with a team-high six kills. Alana Shoff and Tierney Flaherty finished with five kills each.

Leading the offense was freshman setter Amanda Krahl who tallied 15 assists. Defensively, Longley led the squad with seven digs.

"When Arkansas State is in system, they are tough to stop and we didn't serve tought enough, or attack to the spots on our scouting report, to get them out of system.," said head coach Matt Ginipro. "I thought we did some good things in the first set, things I haven't seen in awhile, but then went away from them in the next two. We are still a team struggling to put it all together and now we have injuries to two more starters that will cause us to create another lineup. I'm hoping we can keep it, make the changes we need to make and break this streak very soon."

The Black and Gold battled with the Red Wolves (9-6, 1-0 Sun Belt) in the opening set and found themselves tied midway through at 11-11 following a kill from Flaherty. A-State then used a 10-3 run to open things up and take a 21-14 lead. Following an App State timeout, the Mountaineers would score just two more points in the set and fall 25-16.

A-State took off early on in the second set and jumped out to a 10-4 lead, leading to an Appalachian timeout. The Mountaineers fired back with a kill from Sloan Evans combined with errors from the Red Wolves to pull to within just two points at 11-9.

A 9-4 counter-attack from Arkansas State would put the set out of reach and the Red Wolves would grab a stranglehold on the match with a 25-15 win and 2-0 lead in the match.

A-State finished the sweep with a quick third set win 25-7 over Appalachian.

The Mountaineers will return to the court on Sunday when they take on Little Rock at 12:30 p.m. inside Varsity Gym.
