BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis displayed a solid performance in the opening fall tournament at the Elon Invitational in Elon, N.C. this weekend.
Appalachian turned in eight wins in singles play and four victories in doubles competition. The Apps were led by Devin Knors and Heidi Swope, who both notched a pair of wins, while Knors reached the semifinals in the Phoenix bracket, and Swope won matches in the consolation Powell bracket.
Joining Knors in the Maroon bracket was Marisa Anthony, as the junior captured her first-round match as well. McKayla Zupan was also in the Powell bracket and racked up a win in the first round on Friday in straight sets.
Megan Mullen and Remi Andre both tallied victories as well in their respective brackets.
During doubles play, Andre and Anthony teamed up to capture a match in the consolation round to place sixth, while Zupan and Knors also finished in sixth place as a result of a win following a setback on the first day of the tournament.
Gabrielle Wreder and Melissa Machado captured fifth place as the tandem won a pair of matches on the second and third day of the invitational, defeating UNC Greensboro's Swiderski and Taylor.
Appalachian improved vastly over the weekend, especially in doubles action. After not winning a doubles contest on Friday, the Mountaineers captured four wins in the doubles portion of the tournament the next two days.
“I'm glad that we improved as the tournament went on,” said head coach Blake Mosley. “We had some good moments in this opening invitational, but we can still get better moving forward.”
The Apps return to the court next weekend for the ECU Invitational in Greenville, N.C.
