Emma Longley Lauded by Sun Belt for Strong Weekend

NEW ORLEANS –– Appalachian State University volleyball's true freshman Emma Longley has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week and the Freshman of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday.

“Clearly, Emma had a great weekend for us at Virginia Tech,” said head coach Matt Ginipro. “To have 30 kills in her first-ever collegiate match is just amazing and she followed it up with two more really good performances against Norfolk State and Siena. We have been able to see what she is able to do on the court every day in practice, but it was exciting to see it carry over into match play.”

Longley tallied 30 kills in her debut for the Black and Gold last Friday in a five-set loss to Virginia Tech in the season opener. Her 30 kills were the most for a Mountaineer since Anna Wagner totaled 31 on Aug. 26, 2011 against NC State. The match also served as Longley's first career double-double as the freshman totaled 13 digs in the effort.

In a pair of straight-set sweeps on Saturday, Longley collected 23 more kills and ended the weekend averaging 4.81 kills per set and a .243 hitting percentage.

Longley and the Mountaineers will return to action beginning on Friday night at 7 p.m. as they host UNCW for the start of the Black and Gold Invitational. Over the weekend, App State will also play Wofford and Ohio.
