BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State wrapped up the second week of fall camp with a two-hour practice on Friday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The Mountaineers went mostly light contact on what was one of the hotter days of camp, staying somewhat fresh for Saturday.
The Apps will hold one of their longer scrimmages of camp on Saturday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The scrimmage is closed to the public, but Fan Fest will begin at 6 p.m.
The scrimmage will be the closest thing to a game situation for App State ahead of the opener at Tennessee on Sept. 1. Fourth-year head coach Scott Satterfield will take a hard look all three facets on Saturday.
“We want to touch on a little bit of everything,” Satterfield said. “We'll do some situational stuff offensively and defensively with some third downs situations and put some young guys on the field. We'll get a good feel for where we are after two weeks and where we need to improve.”
With classes starting on Tuesday, the schedule becomes more balanced next week. With the majority of the all-football camp days in the rearview, Satterfield likes where his team is after almost 15 practices, but expects to find out more tomorrow.
“I think (camp) has been good,” Satterfield added. “Our energy level has been high and really our focus is on energy and fundamentals early in camp. We're not where we need to be as far as game time, yet, we've still got plenty time for that. We'll have a big scrimmage tomorrow and scrimmage some more on Thursday. As we get into next week, then we'll start looking very hard at where we are in terms of (starters and backups).”
The first full scrimmage of the fall also means the incoming freshmen get their first extensive, full-speed snaps and the chance to catch their coach's eye.
“You always want to see what your young guys can do because you haven't seen them in a game setting,” Satterfield said. “When the lights come on, I want to see what those guys can do. Sometimes guys look good in practice and it doesn't carry over to games. I want to see who the guys are that are gamers and can come out and make plays.”
Appalachian will practice on Sunday morning and Monday afternoon before classes start on Tuesday.
FAN FEST: Fan Fest begins at 5:30 p.m. with an EXCLUSIVE half-hour window for members of the Wendy's Junior Mountaineer Kids Club and their parents to get autographs with their favorite Appalachian State football student-athletes and coaches before the gates open for the general public. The gates open for the general public at 6 p.m. and student-athletes and coaches will be available for autographs until 7 p.m.
