Softball Set for Last Four Games of 2016

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University softball will wrap up its 2016 campaign this weekend when it faces off against in-state foes, North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T. Saturday's doubleheader against NCCU will begin at 2 p.m. at UNC's Anderson Softball Stadium in Chapel Hill. Sunday's home twinbill with A&T is set to start at 12 p.m.

The Mountaineers (9-43) completed Sun Belt Conference play this past weekend against Texas State and are looking to snap a 14-game losing streak. On the other side, the Eagles (6-42) have lost three straight to the Aggies (17-28) who won those three games in a row after dropping 14 of 15 from March 30-April 24.

North Carolina Central is hitting just .221 as a team and that includes only one hitter with a batting average of at least .300. That one player is Markell Wylie with a clip of exactly .300. Wylie also leads the team or is tied in the team lead in runs scored (23) and hits (39). Behind her and hitting at least .290 are London Booker (.298) and Jenny Tracy (.295).

In the circle, the Eagles' team ERA is 5.25 led by Breanna Carter's mark of 3.73. Carter is 0-2 in 12 appearances, two starts, and 20.2 innings pitched, with one save, 11 strikeouts and 14 walks. The other four hurlers that have logged innings have an ERA between five and six.

North Carolina A&T's best player has been sophomore outfielder, Raven Gray, who is first on the team in batting average at .372. Within the MEAC, Gray is tied for third in triples (4), tied for sixth in hits (51), tied for sixth in total bases (78), eighth in average, and ninth in slugging percentage (.569).

Also hitting above .300 for the Aggies are freshman catcher, Lorrin Turner (.333), freshman utility/pitcher, Zadaisha Young-Waddell (.325), and freshman outfielder, Zadia Davis (.320). Gray has four home runs and 28 RBI but but Young-Waddell leads the squad in both those categories with six and 30, respectively. Those two are responsible for 10 of the team's 16 blasts.

In the circle, North Carolina A&T has struggled with a collective ERA of 4.97. The two with a mark below five include Mohagony Headon (4.22 ERA) and Janika May (4.65 ERA). Those two have the lowest ERA among the four that have thrown, but Young-Waddell has logged more innings than any of them with 108 and two-thirds frames to her name, 19 more than the next closest total.
