BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University softball cut the deficit to two, 5-3, against Georgia State on Sunday, but that's the closest it would get as the Panthers scored four more runs en route to the 9-3 decision.
The Black and Gold fell to 9-36, 2-16 in the Sun Belt and GSU improved to 24-22, 7-8 in conference action. A trio of Mountaineers turned in two-hit efforts including Natalie Orcutt, Tiffany Taynor and Casey Brescia. Prior to today's matinee, Orcutt was just two for her last 18 (.111) and Brescia had never had multiple base knocks in a single contest.
In the circle, Annaleise Kennedy (2-13) made the start, but lasted just one inning. The freshman hurler gave up three earned runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout. In relief, Vanessa Ciocatto threw the final six innings with six earned runs surrendered on nine hits to go with one free pass and two punchouts.
Trailing its visitors 5-0, App State put up a three spot in the bottom of the fourth. That half inning, Pepper Butler scored Cara Parker with a sacrifice fly to center, Brescia had an RBI single that brought in Jenny Dodd and Orcutt forced in Katie Mathewson with a bases-loaded walk. Brescia has tallied five RBI in her last five games after having only two in her first 18 games.
Next up, Appalachian State travels to Charlotte for one game on Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m.
