ATLANTA - Appalachian State University women's tennis (7-12) bounced back from yesterday's loss with an impressive 4-2 win over archrival Georgia Southern (12-8).

The win for Appalachian is the first conference triumph of the season and snaps the Eagles' three-match win streak in the process. Appalachian's win was key as it was the final conference contest of the season.

It was a great win for the Mountaineers in a match that featured three singles matches that went three sets.

“This was a great bounce-back win for us,” said head coach Colin Crothers. “It was huge for us to get a conference win, especially against your archrival and a good team like Georgia Southern. We're getting better at the right time with the conference tournament around the corner, and I couldn't be more proud of the team today.”

Appalachian got the ball rolling in doubles action taking two of three matches and going into singles with a 1-0 lead. Clare Cox and Heidi Swope dealt Mariana Ranzahue and Lindsay Truscott a 6-3 defeat as the No. 1 tandem. Melissa Machado and Gabrielle Wreder racked up a 6-2 triumph over Mary Phillips Smith and Emilia Bujan, 6-2.

App State took the momentum into singles play, as Swope continued her solid day with a three-set win after coming back from a one-game deficit. Swope defeated Francisca Norregaard, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-2 as the No. 5 in the lineup. Mackenzie LaSure notched a win under her belt at the four spot in three sets, as she also surged back from a one-set deficit against Bujan, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Machado would go on to win her first set as the No. 2 in the lineup against Ranzahuer, but suffered defeats in the last two games to fall, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Wreder also fell in her singles match in the No. 3 slot to Truscott, 6-0, 6-2, giving the Eagles their second and last point.

Megan Mullen and Taylor Bygrave partnered up as the No. 2 duo, but their match went unfinished against Riepe and Norregaard. McKayla Zupan's single match went unfinished as well as the No. 6 in the lineup.

The Mountaineers will close the regular season at home against Davidson next Saturday at 10 a.m. Cox, Brianna Armellino and LaSure will be honored on Senior Day for their dedication and commitment to the program.
