CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (12-5) fell short of its seventh-straight win Friday afternoon with a 5-2 setback to Charlotte (11-5) at the Halton Wagner Tennis Complex.
Friday's contest was much closer than the score showed, as two singles matches that went Charlotte's way went to three sets, while the clinching doubles contest for the 49ers was decided by a tiebreak.
The loss snaps the six-match win streak while its the first defeat for Appalachian since Feb. 28. Charlotte claimed the double point and four of six singles matches en route to the win.
Zach Bost and
Trey Morris were the lone student-athletes to record points for the Mountaineers.
Oliver Casey and
Jack Maddocks started the day strong for Appalachian toppling Josh Aubrey and Carl Solik, 6-2. With the Mountaineers off to the strong start, Morris and Bost tried to clinch the doubles point as the third pairing but suffered a 6-4 setback to Sam Brazil and Sam Rice.
With the final doubles match coming down to the No. 1 pairings,
Scott Webster and
Jan-Willem Kleynhans and fought valiantly but fell in a heartbreaker to Vikram Hundal and J. Massalle Ferrer by way of a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreak, giving the hosts the doubles point and a 1-0 lead going into singles competition.
Morris tied up the contest as the No. 6 in the lineup, 1-1, when he downed his counterpart (Brazil), 6-2, 6-1. Maddocks looked to break the tie in his singles contest but fell to Rice in the three slot, 6-2, 7-5. Ferrer would defeat Casey, 6-4, 6-4, to give Charlotte a 3-1 lead as the No. 2 in the next match to finish.
In No. 1 singles, Webster fought back from a one-set deficit to force a third and final game, but fell 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 to clinch the win for the 49ers.
Bost notched his 13th win of the season in straight sets, including a 7-6 (10-8) first-set tiebreaker before downing A. Garcia Moreno in the second game, 6-3.
Willem-Kleynhans also endured a tightly-contested match at the four spot in three sets, where forced a third set after falling in the first game but suffered the defeat to Oriol Puig, 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, 7-5.
The Mountaineers will conclude the weekend with a 1 p.m. match vs. Davidson on Charlotte's home court.
