BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University softball will host Radford for the first time since 2013 on Wednesday inside Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium with a doubleheader set to begin at 4 p.m.
The Mountaineers (8-29) trail the Highlanders (20-14) 13-10 in the all-time series, but got the last laugh when the two teams squared off in Virginia last season. App State inflicted the five-inning run rule in both games of the twinbill with wins by scores of 17-0 and 20-3.
Appalachian State broke new ground on Sunday with its second Sun Belt victory of the season, which snapped a six-loss skid overall and an eight-game conference losing streak. Sunday's 4-3 win also marked the Mountaineers first-ever win over UT Arlington (0-5 prior). In that game, Jenny Dodd was right in the middle of each scoring rally as she hit the solo home run in the second, was hit by a pitch to open the sixth and put the Mountaineers ahead with an RBI single in the seventh.
When looking at Dodd's season as a whole, she currently has 33 RBI, which is the most for an App State freshman since Caroline Rogers was responsible for 34 of them in 2012. Going back even further, the last Mountaineer freshman to have at least 40 RBI in a season was Allie Cashion with 43 in 2010. The Mocksville, N.C., native is second on the squad in home runs with seven and is joined in the 30 RBI club by Cara Parker, who seems to be back to her 2014 self.
Parker is first on the team in multiple categories including home runs (8), hits (37), RBI (36), slugging percentage (.645), and total bases (69). Career-wise, she has moved up to third place in round-trippers with 26. Her .346 batting average is behind only freshman Natalie Orcutt's .350. Orcutt turned in her third three-hit game of the season on Sunday against UTA and first since March 12 against ULM (14-game span).
On the other side, Radford is hitting .283 as a team, but earning its keep in the circle with a collective ERA of 2.84. Four Highlanders are hitting above .300 including Marissa Gagliano (.351), Casey Burns (.321), Nia Chiles (.320), and Kayla Bishton (.308). Radford boasts two pitchers with a sub-2.50 ERA in Abby Morrow (2.24) and Lauren McIntyre (2.42).
