Women's Tennis Hits the Road to Face NCCU

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (5-10) will make the trek to Durham, N.C. for a 1 p.m. match against North Carolina Central (3-9) at the Dr. James W. Younge Tennis Courts on Sunday.

The Mountaineers are coming off a 5-2 win over Gardner-Webb on Tuesday where the Apps five singles victories en route to the triumph. Appalachian improved to 4-2 at home that day.

After breaking a 2-2 tie with Gabrielle Wreder notching a two-set win as the No. 3 in the lineup, McKayla Zupan brought home the win with a clinching victory in three sets after falling in the first game.

Mackenzie LaSure returned for her second-straight win in singles action as the No. 4 in the lineup. Melissa Machado and Wreder each lead the team with six wins apiece, while Heidi Swope is right behind her teammates with five victories.

Appalachian is 30-54 (.357) overall in singles action.

In doubles play, Clare Cox and Swope are now tied with the duos of Taylor Bygrave/LaSure and Bygrave/LaSure with three wins to lead the way. As the No. 1 doubles pairing, Cox and Swope have won two-straight matches including a win in Tuesday's contest.

North Carolina Central is coming off a loss to South Carolina State, 5-2. The Eagles have won all three of their matches on their home court while sporting a 0-7 mark on the road. Jamie Rogers and Mia Ramic lead the Eagles with a 6-5 record in singles competition.

Ramic has been on a hot streak as she is 6-0 since starting the season 0-5. NCCU is 22-43 in singles action this season.

In doubles action, Rogers and Aissa Muamba lead the team with three wins. The Eagles have struggled in doubles play this season with no pairing having over three triumphs. NCCU sports an 8-21 (.276).

In the series, Appalachian has won three out of the past four matchups, including a 5-1 victory last season in Boone.

Appalachian will return to action on Monday at Varsity Courts against East Carolina at 12 p.m.
