Box Score SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Appalachian State University baseball managed just four hits and issued nine walks in a 16-0 loss to Texas State in game two of its three-game Sun Belt weekend series on Saturday at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Bobcats (14-5, 5-0 Sun Belt) opened up a 6-0 lead in the third inning and never looked back. With two men on base, Theodore Hoffman hit a home run over the left field wall off of the Mountaineers' (4-15, 0-5 Sun Belt) starter Seth Hardin.
Texas State would tack on three more runs in the third inning followed by three runs in the fourth inning with the help of a Mountaineer fielding error to take a 9-0.
The Mountaineer bats went quiet this afternoon going 4-for-32 with just three different batters recording a hit. Matt Vernon was the only Mountaineer with multiple hits with a base hit in the third and a double in the sixth.
App State's best scoring chance came in the third inning when Tyler Stroup doubled down the left field line with two outs. One batter later, Vernon reached on a hard-hit infield single to the shortstop, allowing Stroup to advance to third. Tanner Mann-Fix struck out swinging to end the inning.
The Bobcats would add three runs in the sixth inning, two of which were via bases-loaded walks, and four in the eighth to hand the Apps their most lopsided loss of the season.
App State will try to avoid the sweep tomorrow in game three at Bobcat Ballpark. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. ET.
