NEW YORK CITY — All Four Appalachian State University wrestlers competing in the NCAA Division I Championship started Friday's morning session in the wrestle-back bracket. Appalachian's season came to an end as all the Mountaineers lost their second match of the tournament and were eliminated from the tournament.
Michael Longo was on the mat first for App State when he took on the No. 11 seed Tommy Thorn of Minnesota. Longo dropped the consolation match, 10-0. With the loss Longo finished the season at 21-14.
Forrest Przybysz took on the No. 8 seed Chad Welch of Purdue in the consolation second round. Przybysz was eliminated after falling to Welch, 11-1.
Nick Kee took a 9-6 lead into the final period of his second round consolation match against Alex Meyer of Iowa. Meyer tied the score at 9-9 and edged Kee on riding-time point to advance to the next round.
Denzel Dejournette faced Ross Larson of Oklahoma in his Friday morning match. Dejournette was pinned for the first time all season by Larson at the 1:28 mark. Dejournette finished the year at 31-4.
With the Mountaineers being eliminated from the tournament, their outstanding season comes to an end. App State went 12-4 overall with a 6-1 SoCon record. The Mountaineers won a share of the SoCon regular season for the first time since 2012 and won the SoCon Tournament for the first time since 2003.
