Baseball Treks to Texas for Sun Belt Series
Baseball Treks to Texas for Sun Belt Series

Appalachian State University baseball makes the third-longest road trip in its 114-year baseball history this weekend when it travels to Texas State for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series. Game times are set for 4 p.m. ET Friday, 4 p.m. ET Saturday and noon ET Sunday at Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos, Texas.

At 1,227 miles, this weekend's journey to San Marcos is the longest that Appalachian State has ever made for conference games, topping the 1,022-mile trip that it made for last season's Sun Belt series at UT Arlington.

Since the inception of its baseball program in 1903, the only times that Appalachian has ever traveled farther were a 2,401-mile trip to Spokane, Wash. for a three-game series at Gonzaga in 2013 and a 1,973-mile trip to Phoenix for the 1969 NAIA World Series.

Not only is App State making a long trek but a very good Texas State club awaits the Mountaineers when they arrive in the Lone Star State. Texas State enters the weekend with a 12-5 overall record and is 3-0 in Sun Belt play after sweeping a home series from UL Monroe last weekend.

Appalachian State (4-13, 0-3 Sun Belt) rides the momentum of Tuesday's 7-6, come-from-behind win at North Carolina A&T into this weekend's series. The Mountaineers rallied from a 6-5 deficit with one run in the seventh inning and another in the ninth to earn Tuesday's character-building victory in Greensboro. It marked only the eighth time since the beginning of 2014 that Appalachian has won a game that it trailed at any point after the third inning. During that three-season span, App State is just 9-23 in one-run games.

The Mountaineers were especially unlucky in league games last season, particularly on the road. Twelve of Appalachian's 21 conference losses in its inaugural Sun Belt campaign came by two runs or less and a whopping seven of its 12 conference road defeats were lost in walkoff fashion.

Featuring one of college baseball's youngest rosters in 2016, Appalachian State will once again send an all-freshman rotation to the mound this weekend — LHP Bobby Hampton, RHP Seth Hardin and LHP Colin Schmid.

The Mountaineers also have five freshmen among their top eight hitters, highlighted by Tanner Mann-Fix, who ranks 10th in the Sun Belt with a .375 batting average.
