BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University softball will take a break from Sun Belt Conference play on Wednesday when it hosts Campbell for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. inside Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.
The Camels enter their doubleheader tonight against Northern Illinois with a record of 10-9 while the Mountaineers currently sit at 5-19 overall with a 1-2 mark in league action. These two teams met on March 5 as part of the Camel Stampede and App State's offense exploded in the 16-9 victory.
That marked Appalachian's first win over Campbell since 2007 and snapped a two-game skid against the Camels. The Black and Gold registered season highs in runs scored, RBI (16), walks (11), hit-by-pitches (5), and runners left on base (13). Individually, Heather Josey became the first Mountaineer with six RBI in a game since April 15, 2006 when Kasey Motsinger accomplished the feat against UNCG.
In the time since then, Campbell has won five of six contests and in those five wins, it has outscored opponents 35-14 with a batting average of .392 (49-for-125). However, on the season, the Camels have only played three "true" road games and have gone 1-2 in them against the likes of New Mexico State (1-10), College of Charleston (3-12) and North Carolina A&T (6-1).
Campbell boasts the best batting average in the Big South at .321 and that's because of four regulars with averages above .300 including Taesha DuBoise (.397), Rachel McCollum (.395), Amber Schisler (.387), and Madison Herring (.346). Those four clips are all inside the top 12 in the conference with DuBoise coming in at second.
In the circle, the Camels are second-to-last in the Big South with a 5.21 ERA, ahead of only Winthrop at 6.07. The leader in that department has been Schisler with a 3.37 ERA in 27 innings pitched. She is 3-2 in 10 appearances, two starts, with 17 strikeouts and 14 walks. As a team, Campbell has given up 10+ runs six times and lost all of those games.
