SPARTANBURG, S.C. — SoCon heavyweight champion Denzel Dejournette was named Southern Conference Wrestling Athlete of the Month for February, the league office announced on Thursday.
“Denzel keeps getting better and better,” said JohnMark Bentley. “I'm excited for the opportunity in front of him at the NCAA Championship.”
Dejournette won the honor after going 4-0 in dual matches and 2-0 in SoCon matches in February. The redshirt junior started the month with a 6-0 decision win over No. 11 Jared Johnson in the Mountaineers' road win at Chattanooga.
The Winston-Salem, N.C. native then recorded pins in back-to-back matches against VMI and Missouri. Dejournette pinned Tasi Mathias 2:58 minutes into the bout against VMI. The following night against Missouri, Dejournette stuck James Romero at the 2:06 mark.
During the NWCA National Duals Championship Series against Indiana, Dejournette won a 5-1 decision over Garrett Goldman.
This award marks the second time this season that Dejournette has been voted SoCon Wrestling Athlete of the Month after winning in November. Dejournette was also named SoCon Wrestler of the Week three times in 2015-16 and Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year.
Dejournette and three of his teammates will head to New York City for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship Mar. 17.
