CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (2-5) fell on the road to Western Carolina (6-2) by a score of 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
The doubles matches would be tightly contested despite the hosts taking two out of three matches and a 1-0 lead into singles competition. After the duo of
Melissa Machado and
Megan Mullen fell to their counterparts, 6-2,
Mackenzie LaSure and
Taylor Bygrave won their team-leading third match of the season at the three slot over Nicole Nielly and Alex Webb, 7-5.
With the doubles matches tied, the Catamounts' No. 1 duo nipped
Clare Cox and
Heidi Swope, 7-5, to clinch the doubles portion.
In singles competition, the Apps would got on the board to tie the contest, 1-1, winning the first match thanks to Machado's 6-3,6-3 triumph over Savannah Taranto between a matchup of No. 3's. However, WCU got rolling by taking the next four matches. Cox fell to Stacia Kissell, 6-2, 6-2, as the No. 1 in the lineup followed by Swopes, 6-1, 7-5 setback to Shannon Bettiol in a contest between No. 5's.
With WCU leading 3-1,
Rebecca Morse suffered a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Elizabeth Ansari as the No. 5 lineup, clinching the victory for the Catamounts.
After Bygrave's setback to Erin Maguire, 6-3,-3, in the six slot, LaSure gave Appalachian its second singles win over Megan McLinden, 6-3, 7-5.
Appalachian will look to stop the two-match skid on Friday at home against USC Upstate at 2 p.m.
