BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (5-3) will hit the road this weekend for matches in Charleston, S.C. against Citadel (7-9) on Saturday at 1 p.m. and then facing College of Charleston (5-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
App State will Citadel in the Earle Tennis Center before facing CofC in the College of Charleston Tennis Center. The Mountaineers will look for their fourth and fifth straight wins. If Appalachian completes the weekend sweep, it'll be the first time since the 2010-11 campaign the Apps have won five in a row and the best 10-match start since 2010-11 when they started 7-3 as well.
Over the win streak, the Apps have outscored their opponents by a combined score of 18-3.
Appalachian is coming off a convincing 6-1 victory over Campbell last Saturday on the road. The Black and Gold took home the doubles points while capturing the first two singles match to clinch the victory.
Zach Bost won his team-leading fourth straight match as the No. 6 in the lineup.
Going into the weekend, three student-athletes in
Scott Webster,
Oliver Casey and Bost have won multiple matches in a row in singles comptetion. The trio are also a combined 15-7 in singles play.
Trey Morris and
Jack Maddocks have contributed as well with four victories each.
In doubles play, the Mountaineers boast a 16-5 overall record with three pairings all having five wins.
Jan-Willem Kleynhans and Webster are 5-1 and have won their last three matches as the No. 2 tandem, while Bost and Morris have a 5-2 mark primarily at the No. 3 spot where they have four of their victories. Casey/Maddocks also boast a 5-1 record as the No. 1 pairing on the squad.
Scouting Citadel (7-9)The Bulldogs head into Saturday's contest having lost its last three matches after going on a 6-0 streak. Citadel went 2-30 in 2014-15 while falling to ETSU in the SoCon tournament. The last time foes faced off was when App State was in the SoCon in 2013-14. Appalachian rolled to a convincing 7-0 victory.
Scouting College of Charleston (5-2)CofC has won four of its last five matches going into the weekend. Juan Estevarena leads the team in singles play with a 6-1 record in the No. 1 slot while Rodrigo Encinas has the second-best record of 4-2. Rodrigo Encinas/Juan Estevarena also have the squad's best record in doubles play at 6-1 in the No. 1 position. Vasily Kichigin/Josh Record have won their first four matches to start 4-0 as the third pairing in the lineup.
Appalachian will return to the court next Thursday, Mar. 3 at Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. at 2:30 p.m.
