Box Score BOONE, N.C. -- Ronshad Shabazz converted on acrobatic and-one layup with 1:14 left in the game to put Appalachian State University men's basketball up four points, helping secure the victory and snap a six-game losing streak against Troy University, 78-74.
The Mountaineers (7-20, 5-11 SBC) needed clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch, as the Trojans (9-18, 4-12 SBC) forced them into their ninth game decided by six points or less. Shabazz went 3-for-5 in the final 1:14, while
Frank Eaves went 2-for-4.
Leading the Mountaineers offensively was Eaves who finished with 19 points, but it was
Emarius Logan who created a spark off the bench early for App State, finishing with a career-high 17 points -- contributing to Appalachian's 33 bench points. Shabazz also finished in double-figures, finishing with 15 points and six rebounds.
Appalachian withstanded a 30 point game from Troy's Wesley Person by shooting well from beyond the arc and finishing 4-for-10.
App State connected on 12-of-22 three pointers - marking the first time App State has drained double-digit threes since a narrow 91-90 loss to ULM on Feb. 6.
The Black and Gold opened up the game on a 9-2 run - its largest lead of the first half - and finished the half with a 40-38 lead. Troy would make a run and take a 50-49 lead with 14:45 to play in regulation.
On the Apps next trip down the floor,
Matt O'Boyle (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain/Pima Community College) poured in a three to put the Mountaineers back in front 52-50. The three from O'Boyle sparked an 8-3 run. The Trojans wouldn't go away quietly, however, and would tie the game at 57-57 with still 10:38 to play.
A small 6-2 run from Appalachian would open things up and the Mountaineers would lead 63-59 after Logan would splash a three. App State would build its lead up to 70-64 before the Trojans would roar back and trail 71-70 after four-straight points from Person.
With a minuscule one-point advantage, Shabazz drove strong to his left and took the ball to the rim and converted a massive old fashioned three-point play. Free throws down the stretch from Shabazz and Eaves helped seal the victory. The win for Appalachian moved its all-time record against Troy to 6-0.
The Mountaineers return to action Thursday at Georgia Southern. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
