BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (3-3) heads to Spartanburg, S.C. for a 2:30 p.m. match at USC Upstate (1-3) on Wednesday at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
The Mountaineers are coming off a dominating 7-0 win over NC A&T on Saturday, where all six student-athletes for the Apps picked up a victory. All six singles matches went to straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win by
Scott Webster and a pair of 6-0, 6-1 victories from
Oliver Casey and
Jack Maddocks.
Appalachian also went to work in doubles play with three convincing victories while
Zach Bost and
Trey Morris improved to 4-2 and
Jan-Willem Kleynhans/Scott Webster pushed to 3-1. The two tandems are 7-3 combined this season, leading the Mountaineers to 12-5 (.706) so far this season.
In singles competition, Bost has two-straight matches to improve to 3-3 this season while Webster is 3-1 since coming back from injury. Casey, Maddocks and Morris also has three victories as well. With the six wins on Sunday, the Mountaineers moved to 18-18 in singles contests.
USC Upstate is 1-3 this season after coming off three-straight defeats to Wofford (4-3) and Winthrop (5-2) and Elon (6-1) most recently. The Spartans' only win came in the season opener against Gardner-Webb on the road, 4-3. Last season, the Spartans finished with a 7-16 overall record while posting a 4-2 mark in the A-Sun.
Ramon Simonetti and Jamie Yates lead the Spartans, while Simonetti went 12-9 as the No. 1 and Yates went 10-8 as the No. 3 in the lineup last season. The tandem finished 5-6 in doubles competition as the No. 1 pair.
The Mountaineers will have a quick turnaround on Sunday for a 10 a.m. match at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.
