BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (1-1) will have a pair of matches this weekend beginning with a 12 p.m. serve at Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C. The Mountaineers will follow that up with their home opener against UNC Asheville at Deer Valley on Sunday at 12 p.m.
The Apps are coming off a convincing 7-0 win over Lees-McRae where all six student-athletes nabbed a victory in singles and doubles play. Freshman
Alex Brea won his first intercollegiate single and doubles matches. Appalachian picked up the first point with ease sweeping the doubles portion of the contest.
Appalachian's momentum carried over into singles play where all six matches resulted in straight sets. Jan-Willem Kleynhan clinched the final match point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Trey Morris and Brea finished off the shutout with straight-set wins as the five and six spots, respectively.
Presbyterian heads into the contest 0-2 on the season with a 6-1 setback to ACC foe Georgia Tech followed by a loss to SEC opponent South Carolina, 7-0. The Blue Hose finished with a solid 20-9 record last season, including a 12-3 mark at home. In last season's contest between the opponent, the Mountaineers suffered a 5-2 setback with
Oliver Casey and
Zach Bost both picking up points for the Mountaineers tallying singles victories.
Despite the setback, five of the seven matches either went to a third set or tiebreak.
The UNC Asheville Bulldogs have yet to play this season, thanks in large part to the snow storm that postponed their season opener against Mars Hill. The Bulldogs posted a 11-8 mark, while finishing 7-8 after starting last season 4-0. Appalachian came from behind to upend the Bulldogs, 4-3, and hand them their first loss.
App State rallied to win four of six singles matches en route to the win after falling early in doubles competition.
Trey Morris finished off the comeback with a 6-1, 6-0, victory at the No. 6 spot.
Appalachian finished last season with a solid 6-1 mark at home last season.
