BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (1-1) picked up its first victory with a convincing 7-0 win at Lees-McRae (0-2) Tuesday afternoon in the C.D. Chesley Indoor Tennis Courts.
Appalachian picked up all three doubles matches and six singles contests en route to the shutout victory.
"This was a good match for us to win going into the weekend," said head coach Bob Lake. "We really got off on the right foot winning all three doubles matches and it carried over into singles play.I'm proud of the way we played and I'm excited to see what we bring on Saturday and Sunday".
The Mountaineers got the ball rolling winning the three doubles matches with ease. The tandem of Oliver Casey and Jack Maddocks dealt LMC's Joao Araujo and Gabriel Munez a 6-4 defeat at the No. 1 slot.
Zach Bost and Trey Morris dominated Garrett Lakey/Sebastian Zuhr , 6-1, between a matchup of the No. 2 pairings, and Jan-Willem Kleynhans and Alex Brea downed Cole Fields and Adam Chivers 6-4 to give Appalachian the 1-0 lead going into singles play.
Appalachian didn't stop there with Maddocks starting singles play with a straight-set 6-3, 6-4 win on the No. 2 court over Gabriel Munez. In the one spot, Casey continued the solid performance with a straight-set triumph over Araujo, 6-2, 7-6.
The Black and Gold clinched the match point thanks to Willem Kleynhans' singles triump over a 6-3,6-1 win to give the Mountaineers the 4-0 advantage.
Bost kept things rolling as the No. 4 in the lineup with a tough, 6-3, 7-6 win over Sebastian Zuhr. Morris' 6-1, 6-2 decision over Houston Calloway gave the Apps a 6-0 lead followed by Brea's 6-0, 6-3 victory over Tom Deeley to complete the clean sweep.
For Brea, it was the freshman's first intercollegiate win in both doubles and singles.
Appalachian will look to continue the momentum this Saturday on the road against Presbyterian at 12:00 p.m.
