BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University women's tennis (0-2) fell 6-1 to College of Charleston (1-0) on Saturday afternoon in its home opener at Yonahlossee Racquet Club.

The No. 3 doubles spot was the first to finish as the Mackenzie LaSure and Andre Remi team suffered a 6-2 setback. Melissa Machado and Megan Mullen followed shortly at the No. 2 spot, falling 6-3, giving the Cougars the doubles point.

The final No. 1 spot was played out, however, as duo team Clare Cox and Heidi Swope battled hard to push the match to a tiebreaker. During the extra play, the lead was neck and neck all the way to a tied 9-9 set before the Cougars managed two points in a row, giving them the 11-9 edge.

In singles competition, Machado fell to Katherine Schofield 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2, while Cox lost out to Liza Fieldsend in another lengthy, hard-fought 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 contest at the No. 1. Despite coming from behind to try and take back the second set, LaSure fell to Brooke McAmis in a 6-0, 7-5 decision at the No. 3, sealing the 4-0 win for College of Charleston.

With the final three singles positions playing out as well, Gabrielle Wreder fell 6-2, 6-4, to Rachel McNeely at the No. 4, before Swope suffered the 6-1, 6-0 setback to Mara Argyriou at the No. 5.
