Women's Tennis to Play CofC in Home Opener

BOONE, N.C.  - Appalachian State Univeristy women's tennis (0-1) will look for its first victory in the home opener at the Yonahlossee Tennis Club against College of Charleston with first serve set for 10 a.m.

The Apps are coming off a 7-0  setback to then-No. 4 North Carolina at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center where the Tar Heels proved to be too much for the Mountaineers.

Freshman Heidi Swope came the closes to nabbing a set, falling to her opponent 6-3, 7-5. Appalachian will look for its first home opening win since a 4-3 victory over UNC-Ashville in 2013-14.

The Mountaineers are 27-15 over the past five seasons at home with six-straight winning seasons on their home court. Last season, the Apps were an impressive 7-1 in Boone. App State will play five home matches this season.

College of Charleston will open its season on Saturday against the Mountaineers. Last season, the Cougars finished with a 10-10 mark and a 4-1 record in their conference. CofC had a 10-5 home record, but struggled on the road with a 2-7 mark.

In the Mountaineers' last matchup against the Cougars, Appalachian fell 5-2 in the contest. Clare Cox and Gabrielle Wreder both picked up hard-fought five-set victories to earn the two points for Appalachian.

The Mountaineers will return next Saturday at the Yonahlossee Tennis Club against East Carolina at 10 a.m. during a stretch of three home matches in four contests.
