Matics Becomes Third Mountaineer in NFLPA Bowl
BOONE, N.C. — Raycom Media Camellia Bowl hero Zach Matics has been tabbed as the third Appalachian State University football alumnus invited to participate in next week's NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in Carson, Calif.

Matics joins offensive lineman Davante Harris and defensive back Doug Middleton as Appalachian State's representatives in the 2016 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, which is set for Saturday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. ET. The game will be played at Carson's Stubhub Center and televised nationally on ESPN2. Additionally, team practices will be televised live on January 20 and 21 on ESPNU.

A first-team all-Sun Belt Conference honoree, Matics led the Sun Belt and ranked among the top 5 nationally for much of the season in field-goal percentage. He finished the campaign tied for 28th in NCAA Division I FBS by making 82.4 percent of his field-goal attempts (14-of-17).

He was 13-of-14 during the regular season before missing his first two tries in the opening quarter of the Camellia Bowl. However, he made up for the early miscues by drilling a 23-yarder as time expired to lift Appalachian State to a 31-29 victory over Ohio and give the Mountaineers a win in their first-ever NCAA bowl appearance.

In addition to finishing 28th nationally in field-goal percentage, Matics ranked second in the Sun Belt and 37th nationally in kick scoring at 7.9 points per game. He also became the first kicker in Appalachian State history to make two 50-yard field goals in a game (Dec. 5 at South Alabama) and three in a season. He made two game-winning kicks — a 24-yarder in triple overtime that gave the Mountaineers a 44-41 victory over Troy on Oct. 31 and the aforementioned 23-yard game-winner in the Camellia Bowl triumph over Ohio.

Founded in 2012, the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl gives prospective National Football League players the opportunity to showcase their talents to potential employers and fans. In 2015, nearly 200 scouts, player personnel staff, general mangers and head coaches representing every NFL club and several other professional football leagues attended the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl's practices and game.
