Box Score MONROE, LA. - Appalachian State University women's basketball (4-6, 1-0 SBC) started off Sun Belt action the right way grinding out a 57-54 victory at ULM (6-5, 0-2 SBC) Thursday afternoon in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Kaila Craven tied a game high coming off the bench with 14 points on five buckets while Jones rounded out the leading scorers with 10 points (six at the free throw line) and a solid eight boards from the guard position. The backcourt duo led a a balanced attack of eight student-athletes that scored during the game. Story led the team with three assists to go along with eight points.
Defensively, the Apps were all over the place forcing 19 turnovers and converting the Warhawk miscues into 20 points. Appalachian turned the ball over just 12 times and the bench held a significant advantage over the ULM reserves, 22-6.
The game came down to the wire and was decided by which team would make the plays down the stretch, and the Mountaineers did just that.
Trailing 52-51 with 3:20 left in the game following a Daja Chase layup, the Apps scored six of the next eight points en route to their first road win of the season and the first win on the road to open conference play since the 1996-97 season. The defense clamped down in the final minutes of the contest holding ULM to 2-for-9 over the final 3:59 while forcing the hosts to miss their last five buckets.
Carter sparked the run with a steal and a layup on the other end before Marshall grabbed an offensive board and converted the put back, giving the Mountaineers a 55-52 lead. The Warhawks came down for one of its final chances to tie the game with the first 3-point attempt coming off the rim for Marshall to grab the big rebound.ULM would cut the deficit to one possession, 56-54 while Jones came back down to push the lead to three after hitting the back end at the line. The Warhawks came down for its final opportunity hoisting a trifecta, but a hard close out forced the shot to hit the rim.
It was a low-scoring first half with both teams failing to reach 30 points. It was a neck-and-neck contest in the opening frame with five lead changes and a tie.
The Mountaineers came out of the gate with a 5-0 lead in the first 2:09 of the contest thanks to four early points from Story and a free throw from Marshall. In the ensuing 5:28, the Warhawks clawed their way back to take a 15-13 lead before a jumper from
Ashley Bassett-Smith tied the game before the second quarter.
Another 5-0 run to start the second frame pushed the Apps to a 20-15 lead after Story converted on a pair at the free throw line and Craven hit one of her two treys in the quarter.
ULM bounced back with a quick five points of its own to tie the game 20-all. Another Craven trifecta and a Cooper layup on the next two possession put the Apps back up 25-21, and eventually went into the half with a 27-23 lead.
App State's defense was stingy in the first stanza holding ULM to 29.5 percent shooting from the field while holding its leading scorer Alayshia Hunter scoreless thanks to a pair of fouls.
The Black and Gold held the lead throughout the third quarter despite a 3:28 scoring drought midway through the period, allowing ULM to cut the deficit to three, 33-30. Appalachian responded with a 6-0 run thanks to the duo of Craven and Jones with consecutive layups from the freshman and Jones hitting a pair at the charity stripe.
However, the Warhawks were able to trim the lead to five, 39-34, going into the final period. The momentum started to swing in ULM's favor in the beginning of the fourth with an 11-2 run that tied the game 41-apiece. From that point on, the Apps and Warhawks went back and forth until the final minutes of the game when App State made the plays it needed to pull out a solid victory on the road.
